Miljenka received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Women’s Studies. She earned her Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. She is a registered clinical counsellor and is registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.
Miljenka works with a diversity of clients in private practice. Since 1990 she has built a reputation for providing exceptional professional counselling services for individuals, couples and families.
Miljenka has over twenty-five years of experience in private practice. She has also worked with children and youth in counselling centers, such as The Children’s Foundation and Share Society. Miljenka spent 11 years working as a trauma therapist with Vancouver Incest and Sexual Abuse Center (VISAC) with men and women who were sexually abused as children or whom experienced sexual assault as adults. While working at VISAC, she facilitated numerous psycho educational groups for survivors of sexual assault and incest. Miljenka was one of the first therapists to work in the Diversity program at Family Services of Greater Vancouver. This program allowed alternative counselling for gay and lesbian families, questioning youth, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. She is often contracted to do trauma counselling with war survivors from the war in the Balkans as she also speaks Croatian and Bosnian.
Miljenka is skilled in supporting clients with their sexuality, sexual orientation and gender identity issues.
Writers, musicians and artists who have needed support to push past blocks to creative energies as well as clients experiencing mid-life changes, career and relationship issues. Miljenka brings warmth, humor, creativity and unconditional positive regard to her counselling relationships.
Teaching and supervising students to be excellent therapists is also a passion for Miljenka. She has been a teaching faculty member in the Master’s Program in Counselling Psychology at City University of Seattle in Vancouver. She has been Program Manager and Clinical Supervisor in the Trauma Programs at Family Services of the North Shore, and a instructor in the Counselling Skills and Addictions Program at Vancouver Community College. She is also contracted with the Justice Department of Canada in the Vicarious Trauma Counselling Program to work with lawyers, and legal teams who have experienced trauma and vicarious trauma.
Miljenka is an avid outdoors women. Nature and mental health go hand in hand for her. She is a hiker, skier and paddler. She believes that animals and animal companions aid people in psychological health.
